Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback turned star broadcaster Tony Romo is no stranger to making headlines, but this one was completely unexpected as he was arrested on Thursday night. Below is what we know so far.
What we know about Romo’s arrest
Romo was taken into custody in Milwaukee for allegedly operating while under the influence and later released, according to Mariana La Roche and Nick Bohr from ABC’s WISN.
“Romo was stopped Thursday around 8 p.m. while traveling southbound on Interstate 43 and performed poorly on standard field sobriety tests,” the report reads. “He was taken into custody for OWI book and released.”
According to the report, in Wisconsin, “a first-offense OWI is generally a civil offense, not a criminal charge.” Romo grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, where he graduated from high school.
Court date set for Tony Romo
Romo’s court date is set for Monday, Sept. 21, when the NFL season will already be underway. It remains unclear if the court date will affect his availability as a broadcaster but it’s unlikely it will.
Following a 13-year career in the NFL that yielded four Pro Bowls, Romo retired in 2017 before diving into broadcasting. He rapidly emerged as one of the best analysts in the NFL for CBS and signed a 10-year, $180 million deal with the network.
