Dallas Cowboys training camp kicks off and in the final stretch before Wednesday’s opening practice, I’m previewing the top battles to watch. We’re starting things off with what I consider to be the most important battle of all: the one for starting roles at cornerback.

The fighters

• DaRon Bland
• Cobie Durant
• Shavon Revel Jr.

Why this battle is different

Talk about a true clean slate. There’s a new defensive coordinator in town who specializes in defensive backs development (Christian Parker), a key free agency addition (Durant), a second-year player entering his first true training camp (Revel Jr.), and a team veteran trying to prove he’s still got it (Bland).

The Cowboys have a lot of battles going on but few are for true starting roles. Outside cornerback is the one position that two starting jobs are up for grabs. And make no mistake about it, even DaRon Bland (who signed a $92 million deal last year) needs to compete. After all, he’s undergone foot surgery in each of the last two offseasons.

It’s the most crucial battle of camp, too. Though the Cowboys’ pass rush will be improved with star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams adapted to the team and the arrivals of edge rushers Rashan Gary and first-round rookie Malachi Lawrence, it likely won’t be good enough to survive a mediocre CB room. Simply put, the secondary has to be better than last year.

If there’s one battle that will move the needle for the Cowboys defense, it should be this one.

What the Cowboys will be looking for

Two things to watch in this battle: Can Revel Jr. play zone well enough to earn the Cowboys’ trust? New DC Christian Parker wants to be unpredictable, so if he wants to get on the field, he must show he can play zone and man coverage (his specialty coming out of college) alike.

During a conversation on our A to Z Sports Dallas channel, Cowboys insider Joseph Hoyt explained it best:

“I think the last thing they want to do is give a telltale sign about what they’re going to be doing because, ‘Oh hey, if Shavon Revel’s in there, they’re going to run man coverage,’ because that’s where he’s proficient,” Hoyt said. “In order for Revel to play a lot, he needs to be proficient in zone coverage too.”

There’s another side of the coin to the story, though.

Parker comes from a Philadelphia Eagles defense that played man coverage at the highest rate in the NFL (and ranked first in EPA/play when doing so). Does that give an edge to Revel Jr. and Bland, who have excelled in man coverage before? Or does Parker simply opt toward playing more zone given he has less talent at CB than he did in Philly?

The Caleb Downs question

Downs is starting at nickel, and he’ll have nothing to do with the outside cornerback battle. Except… we know the Cowboys like Downs’ ability to play everywhere on the defensive side of the field. They plan to start him off at nickel, but what about when he isn’t there? Who is the Cowboys’ backup plan at nickel?

I wonder if the answer to that is, for example, Durant… does that have any impact on who they start outside in an effort to keep him available should he be needed in the slot? We’ll see.

Prediction

I think Durant and Bland get the jobs early on. However, I’m predicting a strong camp for Revel Jr. That could position him to capitalize should any of his two teammates get off to a slow start during the regular season.

I’d be surprised if Revel Jr. never gets to start in the 2026 NFL season.
