Browns make the needed move with S Grant Delpit, and it just cost them a whole lot of money to do so
The Cleveland Browns have knocked out their second key extension in back-to-back days. Safety Grant Delpit has a new deal for the Browns and the timing makes sense.
Training camp is here for the Cleveland Browns and they’ve been very active on the money front as a result.
The Browns have signed safety Grant Delpit to a 3-year contract extension worth $48 million with $35 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The deal comes just one day after Cleveland made cornerback Denzel Ward the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL on a 2-year extension, pushing the Browns past $100 million in extensions over back-to-back days to open training camp.
Delpit’s new deal will pay him $16 million per season, a significant raise from the $12 million annual average he earned on his previous 3-year, $36 million contract. The extension was expected after Delpit held out during OTAs this offseason, a situation that was likely to carry over into a hold-in during training camp until a new deal got done.
Delpit has earned the payday
The new contract is well-earned for a player who has been both available and productive for Cleveland over the past two seasons. Delpit has missed just one game over the last two years while becoming a more complete safety.
In 2025, Delpit recorded 89 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 interception with 2 forced fumbles for a strong Browns defense. He’s recorded at least 80 tackles in each of the last 4 seasons, showing the consistency that made this extension a priority for the front office.
At $16 million per year, Delpit falls just behind Jesse Bates on the per-year average for his position and is now the 9th highest-paid safety in the NFL.
Browns investing in defensive leadership with Myles Garrett gone
Cleveland moved Myles Garrett in the offseason, leaving Ward and Delpit as the two veteran leaders on defense. After extending Ward on Tuesday, the Browns made it a point to get Delpit’s deal done quickly, showing they want to keep those two veterans intact for a new-look defense. Both players figure to be focal points alongside linebacker Carson Schwesinger and pass rusher Jared Verse.
The back-to-back extensions send a clear message as the Browns open training camp under first-year head coach Todd Monken. Cleveland is taking care of its core defensive players, and the investment signals the franchise’s confidence in these players heading into 2026.
