An elite four-star wide receiver landed in the Tennessee Vols’ backyard this week, much to the delight of head coach Josh Heupel.
An elite wide receiver landed in the Tennessee Vols’ backyard this week.
According to On3’s Sam Spiegelman, 2028 four-star wide receiver David Thomas is transferring from Stillwater High in Oklahoma to Knoxville Catholic ahead of his junior season.
Thomas, 5-foot-11/160 pounds, is rated by Rivals as the No. 29 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 186 overall player in the 2028 recruiting class.
Tennessee and Ole Miss are two programs that are standing out early for Thomas.
“The way they run things out there, I really like it and I’m excited to see what they do this season,” said Thomas to On3 of his interest in the Vols. “With Coach (Kelsey) Pope, I love talking to him. I like that he doesn’t sugarcoat anything. He told me what he likes about my game, where I can fit into their program, and he also told me what I need to get better at. As a player, I like that in a coach.”
Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope visited Thomas in Oklahoma in April, so the Vols have been working on the relationship for a little while.
There’s obviously a long way to go before Thomas makes a decision, but it certainly won’t be a surprise if Tennessee emerges as the team to beat now that he’s playing high school football in Knoxville.
