The Kansas City Chiefs’ biggest storyline of 2026 NFL training camp has been rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen. Now, the biggest story might become his training camp injury and how it happened.
According to multiple reports, Allen suffered an injury during special teams drills. He collided with CB Kaiir Elam and went down to the ground in pain. He stayed down for some time with his helmet buried in the turf. He eventually limped off the football field gingerly with help from two trainers.
The team eventually brought a cart for him. He rode in the front of the cart over to the team’s medical tent. He later rode the cart up the hill, still in the front of the cart, but was visibly shaken.
Allen, a fifth-round draft pick out of the University of Cincinnati, had been an early bright spot at training camp. He had earned repetitions with the first-team offense, with Andy Reid noting that he had the trust of QB Patrick Mahomes. He was the biggest standout of any player throughout training camp to this point, with an exceptional practice on Friday.

Allen suffered what appears to be a left leg injury. We won’t know until testing is done just how severe the injury might be. What’s abundantly clear in this situation is that the Chiefs can’t afford an injury to a player like Allen. He looked to be a breakout star at the wide receiver position, a spot where they desperately needed someone to emerge.
The big question that fans will be asking here: Why is Allen working on punt coverage if he’s been receiving starting repetitions on offense?
The reality is that Allen is a rookie, and that’s the path that most rookies take to making an impact early in their careers. With guys like Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, and Rashee Rice ahead of him on the depth chart, Allen needed an alternative way to make an impact. Unfortunately, that alternative may now be his undoing as the team awaits word on the severity of his injury.
