Miami Hurricanes’ latest 5-star commitment is a long-overdue turning point for the program, and college football should be afraid
Mario Cristobal is starting to build a wall around South Florida, and that could be the ultimate foundation for a potential Hurricane resurgence.
The Miami Hurricanes made shockwaves once again in the college football recruiting world on Friday. The No. 1 overall athlete in the 2027 class, Amir Sears, committed to Mario Cristobal and the Canes over the Michigan Wolverines, LSU Tigers, and Texas A&M Aggies.
Sears recently reclassified from the 2028 class, where he was the No. 1 overall ranked recruit by 247Sports. The Miami Columbus High standout retained his five-star status, which gives the Hurricanes five five-star commits in their 2027 recruiting class, according to 247Sports.
Landing Sears signals a turning point for Miami recruiting
Being a South Florida recruit, landing Sears was particularly important for Cristobal for a number of reasons. But none was bigger than proving that a major change has occurred with the program. For decades, Miami had watched players like Patrick Peterson, Calvin Ridley, and most recently Jeremiah Smith leave the area and choose other programs over the Hurricanes despite being generational local talents.
By landing someone of the ilk of Sears, Cristobal has shown he’s able to start changing that trend in the right direction for the Hurricanes. Sears joins fellow local five star in Miami Carol City WR Nick Lennear, who committed to the Hurricanes back in March.
The Canes’ 2027 class is among the best in program history
Miami’s class is as talented as they’ve had in a long time, perhaps ever. The Hurricanes currently sit at No. 2 by 247Sports and No. 3 by Rivals in the team rankings following Sears’ commitment on Friday.
But perhaps Sears’ commitment itself is the most notable development of all, as well as that of Lennear, among others. The U is finally again a destination that top-tier South Florida recruits are lining up to play for, and that could be a great thing for Cristobal and the Canes and a bad thing for the rest of the country.
