The big defender is a huge part of Todd Bowles’ defense, and it looks very much like he will be again in 2026.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and veteran defensive tackle Vita Vea remain far apart on a contract extension, and that disconnect has played out in the public eye recently. Vea is currently conducting a “hold-in” during training camp, after recently demanding a trade.
The natural question is whether the Buccaneers will consider that trade request. Based on the organization’s actions over the weekend, the answer appears to be a clear and resounding no.
The Buccaneers unveiled their fourth and final player mural on the corner of Raymond James Stadium over the weekend. Lo and behold, it was Vea.

The choices Tampa Bay made here raise a few eyebrows. The Bucs also included quarterback Baker Mayfield as one of the four murals. That shouldn’t be too much of a surprise since Mayfield is the team’s starting quarterback, unquestioned leader, and one of the most prominent faces of the franchise.
However, having two of your four featured players in very public contract disputes with the organization plastered on the corner of your stadium is a bit of an eyebrow-raising move.
It’s crystal clear now that the Bucs see Vea as a big part of their plans in 2026 regardless of his contract demands. And that surely means the big defensive tackle’s request to find a new team to play for and get paid by in the coming weeks and months will not come to pass this year.
We’ll see how the contract situation between Vea and Tampa Bay ultimately plays out by the time free agency arrives next year, but the organization has clearly and definitively made its stance known. The Buccaneers want Vita Vea in the building, and they’re willing to let the whole world know it.
