Jon-Eric Sullivan, what did we do to deserve you?!? It was just hours ago that I wrote up the news that the Miami Dolphins‘ AFC East rivals in New England were set to waive a former top-100 draft choice on their offensive line. And that Miami should be ready to pounce.
And here we are, just after 4PM EST on the same day…and the Miami Dolphins announced that they’re flipping picks with the Patriots for the services of OL Caedan Wallace. Summer roster transactions make for strange bedfellows at times — as evidenced by this deal.

The Miami Dolphins will ship a 2028 sixth-round draft choice to New England for Wallace and a 2029 seventh-round draft selection. It’s a patented late-round pick swap to offload a player for New England. Get SOMETHING for someone you’re moving on from. Why would this move make sense for the Dolphins?
Because they get to bypass the waiver system. For the first month of this year’s regular season, the waiver wire is dictated by the previous season’s NFL Draft order. Miami is outside the top-10 teams in order of getting a claim processed. Trading a future late-round asset ensures that you get the player in question.
Miami also has a need for some offensive line depth. Utility lineman Jamaree Salyer has been missing in action over the past week or so. That, plus the team’s shaky status at right tackle with Austin Jackson’s durability history? There’s a market to be filled by a collegiate right tackle that’s played essentially everything but right tackle since being drafted by the Patriots. The Miami Dolphins will now hope their player development approach can tap into Wallace’s potential. They’ll have him under contract for two seasons to find out what they have.
