Earlier this offseason, there was talk that Denver Broncos linebacker Jonah Elliss could move from outside linebacker to insider linebacker.

The reason given was because of the Broncos’ depth on the edge.

“You’re going to see Elliss take some snaps inside,” said Denver head coach Sean Payton in March. “That is something that we have discussed relative to our depth at the edge.”

In June, however, Payton announced that Elliss will be staying at outside linebacker because he was simply playing too well for the Broncos to move him.

“(I) felt like, ‘Man, we’re taking a position that’s harder to find and moving him to a position that we think might be a little easier to replace,’’’ said Payton of the decision to keep Elliss at outside linebacker. “That’s not to say that we can’t package a few things, but I think we felt like he’s really ascending as an edge player and we didn’t want to disrupt that.”

On Wednesday, Elliss was asked about the since-nixed move to inside linebacker, and he made it quite clear that he’s willing to do whatever he needs to do to help the Broncos win the Super Bowl.

“It’s interesting, I’ve never really played it,” said Elliss. “I played it a little in college, but I ended up getting switched to the edge. I’m always willing to do what the team needs me to do. Whether that’s playing inside, or if that’s playing all the special teams — whatever I can do to help us to get to a championship is what I’ll do.”

That’s a championship mindset. When you have a roster full of players who are willing to put the team first, that’s when special seasons happen.

Not only do Elliss’ comments show what kind of mindset he has, but it’s also a great example for all of the young players on Denver’s roster.
