Bills GM Brandon Beane is exploring every avenue to improve the roster that could improve their Super Bowl chances
After multiple close calls in the playoffs without a Super Bowl, Brandon Beane is looking to make a huge swing.
The Buffalo Bills are trying to figure out how to win their first Super Bowl, and the window for quarterback Josh Allen is shrinking. General manager Brandon Beane has been under fire for failing to give Allen a roster that can finally win a world title.
In turn, he’s making calls to stimulate the roster to a place where they could bring in an elite player to elevate the defense. According to Mike Garofolo of NFL Network, the Bills were one of a few teams to call on defensive tackle Vita Vea of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“So, my understanding is there has been communication between the sides. A deal is not imminent. Teams have called the Buccaneers to see if they’re interested in trading them; amongst them, I’m told, are the Bills, the Bears, the 49ers, and a few others as well. But the Buccaneers continue to say internally they are not trading Vita Vea,” said Garofolo.
Vita Vea would reshape the Buffalo Bills’ defense
It’s noteworthy that the Buccaneers do not want to trade Vea, as they see him as a cornerstone of the franchise. He is due a contract extension, and the defensive tackle market is getting higher by the day.
“He hasn’t been practicing because he is upset with the fact that he’s entering the final year of his deal, set to make around 18 million dollars this upcoming season, with the top of the defensive tackle market now at 38 million, and a few other guys that he feels his production is comparable with also getting deals in the 30-plus million-dollar range,” said Garofolo.
Adding Vea would be a very interesting idea. He would slot in perfectly next to Ed Oliver on a win-now team, but there are some difficulties in making a trade happen. Currently, the Bills wouldn’t be able to absorb Vea in a trade without sending any money out. They have approximately $10.5 million in salary cap space after extending guard O’Cyrus Torrence, and Vea would bring over an $18 million salary cap hit. In order to make a trade work, they would have to find a way to clear some cap space, which is certainly doable, but it will take some effort.
Beane being this serious about improving the roster is a good thing for the Bills, but it will take some extra effort to get there.
