Donte Whitner’s recent comments about San Francisco 49ers cornerbacks Renardo Green and Jack Jones sound alarming on the surface, but they don’t hold up under scrutiny. The former San Francisco safety questioned the availability and reliability of the 49ers’ current corner room, and while he gets part of the picture right, the overall take is off.

Let’s take a look at what he said. 

Renardo Green’s availability is not a concern

Whitner cited Green as a young, physical player with potential but raised concerns about his ability to stay on the field: 

“Renardo Green has talent. He’s young and physical, but now we’re starting to see a pattern with injuries. I don’t care how talented you are, if you aren’t available, I can’t trust you,” Whitner said. 

Now, I get it. Green is currently dealing with hamstring issues, and he dealt with similar stuff in 2025. But here’s the thing: 

Renardo Green has played in 31 of 34 regular season games in his first 2 years in the NFL. That’s the 49ers’ second-round pick out of the 2024 draft from Florida State, and he’s been available…what are we doing here?

Every player in the league deals with stuff, but Green has pushed through his and been on the field. Questioning his availability at this point is a little far-fetched, and on top of that, he’s still a young player. 

We still don’t fully know what to expect from him. The ceiling is still being determined, and that’s fine. Whitner at least got this part right…he does have some talent. 

Jack Jones is a fair critique, but it doesn’t matter much

Now, Jack Jones? Whitner gets it fairly right when considering his play skills:

“He gives you experience and ball skills. He’ll make a play that will make you say ‘Damn, that was nice’, and two series later he’ll do the same things that will make you say ‘What the hell was that?’. That’s inconsistency,” Whitner stated. 

The inconsistency with Jack Jones’ play is real. I’m not sure how much stock you put into PFF, but Jones had a coverage grade of 54.7, which ranked 88th among 114 corners last year. His run defense grade, however, was a 77.8, which ranked 14th at the position. 

He’s clearly much better getting involved in the run game and making tackles near the line of scrimmage than actually covering in the passing game. Jones also allowed a 112.7 passer rating when targeted last year. 

Look, there’s no doubt that’s not good for the 49ers. 

But here’s where Whitner misses the mark again. He’s treating Jack Jones like a starting corner, as if this is some massive problem for the 49ers. 

Jones is on a $1 million deal for the season. He’s not expected to play that much. 

San Francisco has Renardo Green, Upton Stout, and Deommodore Lenoir. They also drafted Ephesians Prysock this year, and I would expect to see him on the field over Jones.

The 49ers’ defense will be fine

Do I think the 49ers have the greatest secondary in the world? No. But I really like their front 7, which I think will help them out in the pass game this year. 

Raheem Morris will also put them in some good positions to defend plays through the air, and the corners aren’t slouches either. They have solid, capable players at the position and 2 solid safeties in Malik Mustapha and Ji’Ayir Brown.

Look, as much as I respect Donte Whitner as a player — the man was awesome for the 49ers — he completely missed the mark when talking about their current cornerback room. 

The Renardo Green availability concern doesn’t hold up with the numbers, and the Jack Jones critique, while fair on the merits, doesn’t account for the fact that Jones likely won’t see significant playing time. 

San Francisco’s defense will be just fine, and I truly believe we’ll see continued growth from these two players.
