Tennessee improved to 2-0 after a convincing 21 point win on the road against Georgia Tech.
The Tennessee Vols made a big jump in the latest power rankings from CBS Sports.
A bigger jump than most expected, in fact.
Tennessee, which climbed from No. 18 to No. 15 in the AP Top 25 poll following a 45-24 road win over Georgia Tech, was ranked at No. 16 in CBS Sports’ power rankings last week.
After the 21-point win over the Yellow Jackets, the Vols moved up four spots to No. 12.
“The Vols leaned on DeSean Bishop, who ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns, in a 45-24 road win at Georgia Tech,” noted CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello. “Quarterback Faizon Brandon wasn’t impressive (10-21, 148 yards, 2 TDs), but the freshman did not commit a turnover, and that’s rule No. 1 for a young player on the road.”
Tennessee moved past Texas Tech, Penn State, Oklahoma, and Oregon in the power rankings.
By the way, I don’t agree with the assertion from CBS Sports that Vols true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon “wasn’t impressive.”
Brandon didn’t light up the box score, but he played extremely well for an 18-year-old making his first career start on the road. The Greensboro, NC native was poised, showed great leadership, and made some big-time plays when Tennessee had to have it.
The stat line wasn’t overly impressive, but what Brandon did from an operation standpoint on the road against Georgia Tech was pretty incredible.
