The Tennessee Vols have been a run-heavy team through the first two games of the season.

Tennessee is averaging 24 passes per game and 46 rush attempts per game.

It’s been a “vanilla” approach from Josh Heupel’s offense, but that’s not expected to last.

Former Vols quarterback Jarrett Guarantano thinks Tennessee has been holding some stuff back offensively.

As a result, Tennessee fans could see an expanded playbook when Tennessee hosts Texas on September 26.

“I still think that we haven’t shown what we can do as an offense,” said Guarantano on 104.5 The Zone’s 3HL this week. “In terms of vanilla plays and in terms of being comfortable where we’ve been at (in games), I think we’re running a lot of plays that allows our quarterback to be really free and really comfortable. I think there’s a lot of things that we’ll be able to show come SEC play that we haven’t shown yet.

“Obviously, the first three games of the year are not against the greatest opponents. Georgia Tech is a really good ACC opponent, but it didn’t allow us the opportunity that we needed to kind of show different things and show different complexities of our offense. … When SEC play comes around, they’re probably going to try to load the box and stop the run game and make Faizon (Brandon) have to beat them. And I’m really interested to see how we can scheme up and help Faizon out in those type of games — because that’s when it’s going to be a lot harder to run the football against bigger fronts and linebackers that move around and safeties that can make some tackles.”

I don’t think Tennessee has necessarily been hiding a bunch of stuff early this season, I just think they’ve done what they’ve had to do to win games. And I also think they didn’t want to put too much on true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon early in the season.

Brandon will get to settle in a little more this weekend against Kennesaw State before the big game against Texas.

There’s no doubt that Brandon will be asked to do more against the Longhorns than he was asked to do against Georgia Tech last week. The good news for the Vols, though, is that all Texas will have is the “vanilla” game film from Tennessee’s offense.

Tennessee, meanwhile, has the game film from the Longhorns’ hard-fought game against Ohio State, which is a game where Texas had to lay all of their cards on the table. That’s a small advantage for Tennessee.
