There are plenty of choices that LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has made in his career that he should be embarrassed by. 

But this week, specifically, he should be embarrassed by the latest intel coming out of Baton Rouge ahead of LSU’s big game against Ole Miss in Oxford. 

This weekend, of course, will be Kiffin’s first trip back to Oxford since he quit on his Ole Miss players late last season. 

And according to On3’s Chris Low, Kiffin feels this game is “personal” and he wants to embarrass Ole Miss. 

“This one is personal for him, more than you will ever know,” said an LSU source to On3. “Lane is pretty good at putting on one face publicly, but showing another face to his team. They’re well aware of what this game means to him and how personal it is. He doesn’t just want to beat these guys. He wants to embarrass them, and he wants the heat, wants every bit of it.”

This is a slap in the face to the players Kiffin coached at Ole Miss and, honestly, the entire city of Oxford.

Why is this game so personal for Kiffin of all people? He’s the one who quit on his players at Ole Miss last season to take the LSU job. There’s no denying that LSU is a better job than Ole Miss, and the timing of the college football calendar is largely responsible for the way things went down between Kiffin and the Rebels. But he still made the choice to leave. He made the choice to quit on his players and not finish what he started with that team.

“Yeah, it was definitely a weird process, (Kiffin) leaving right when we were getting a chance to play for everything we had worked for, and also just because me coming from Ferris State, our coach was there for the longest and he will retire there,” said Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss to On3 earlier this summer. “I guess I wasn’t used to something like that and used to that situation and how he handled it. I mean, it is what it is. It’s a decision that he made. He thought that it was better for his career and better for his family…That’s what he prioritized.”

To essentially gaslight everyone into thinking that this is supposed to be personal for him is a ridiculous move — even by Kiffin’s low standards. Ole Miss didn’t do anything to Kiffin. Ole Miss provided a place where he was able to rehab his image and become a star coach in the SEC. They wanted to keep him. That’s all Ole Miss is guilty of, and it’s personal for Kiffin?

I don’t think there’s a more toxic way for Kiffin to approach this game, to act like Ole Miss is the villain in his story. The Rebels did absolutely nothing wrong except try to keep their coach to finish a season that started with championship aspirations but ended before reaching that goal (maybe due to the fact that their head coach quit on them).

Kiffin quit and didn’t want to finish the season with his players at Ole Miss. Lane Kiffin went against everything that coaching is about because it wasn’t what he felt was best for Lane Kiffin. And that’s his choice. I get it. Some people never grow up, and Kiffin is one of those people. But saying that he wants to embarrass the school that gave him a home for the last six seasons and wanted to keep him is one of the most childish things Kiffin has ever done. And his list of childish things is miles longer than a CVS receipt.

Kiffin knows how to coach football, and he knows how to motivate players. But he’s no coach. You’ve gotta be selfless to be a real coach. Nah, he’s just an opportunist who craves the spotlight and will throw anyone — and I mean anyone — under the bus to make sure no one steals a bit of it.
