The San Francisco 49ers may genuinely be cursed at this point. Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was carted off the field during today’s game against the Miami Dolphins with an ankle injury. Robinson has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

The play itself made it even more painful to watch. Robinson was running a crossing route, Brock Purdy hit him around the 5-yard line, and what should have been an easy touchdown turned into a catch at the five followed by a non-contact injury. Robinson went down without anyone touching him, and that is almost always the scariest type of injury you can see on a football field.

We saw it with De’Zhaun Stribling last week in Australia and now it happened on the 49ers’ home turf. This team is extremely banged up.

The 49ers’ injury nightmare at receiver

Look, the 49ers cannot catch a break at wide receiver this season. The Robinson injury is just the latest in a string of losses that has absolutely gutted this position group.

San Francisco lost Ricky Pearsall during the preseason. Christian Kirk has been on injured reserve and remains there. De’Zhaun Stribling went down last week with an ankle injury that will cause him to miss most of 2026. And now Robinson joins the list.

That is four wide receivers either lost for significant time or currently unavailable. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, that is a devastating stretch of bad luck, and it all happened in a matter of weeks.

What we know so far

There is no official word yet on Robinson’s diagnosis or any potential recovery timeline. The fact that he was carted off the field is never a good sign, and the non-contact nature of the ankle injury only adds to the concern.

I think the 49ers are going to have to start looking at every possible option to add depth at wide receiver. You cannot keep losing players at this rate and expect to compete at the level this team wants to compete at. They already added Deebo Samuel, but they may need to make another move. Brock Purdy needs weapons around him, and the 49ers’ receiver room is getting thinner by the week.

The 49ers’ injury issues are stacking up at a rapid rate, and at some point, the front office is going to have to respond. Whether that means a trade, a free-agent addition, or leaning harder on the tight end group, something has to give. This team is too talented everywhere else to let the wide receiver position be the thing that derails its season.
