NFL hit a Browns veteran where it hurts shortly before Week 3 game against Panthers
A Browns defender has been fined by the NFL for a play from the Week 2 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Cleveland Browns are back in action in Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers, looking to move to 2-1 on the season. Coming out of their close road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one Browns defender’s pockets are a little lighter due to a fine handed down by the NFL.
Browns veteran hit with $6,361 fine for penalty against Bucs
Backup defensive end Sam Williams, whom the Browns signed before the regular season began, was fined $6,361 for a face mask committed at the 13:28 mark of the first quarter against the Buccaneers. The penalty was classified as unnecessary roughness, and it made Cleveland’s first win of the season come with a price tag for Williams.
Williams is the only Browns player to be fined from the Week 2 win. That comes as a bit of a surprise given that safety Grant Delpit got into a dustup with Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs during the game. The shoving match between Delpit and Wirfs looked like the kind of incident that could draw a fine potentially, but Delpit came away clean.
Williams made three tackles against the Buccaneers and has seven tackles through two games as a backup defensive end for the Browns. He hasn’t provided much in terms of pass rush yet, but his motor is noticeable. Williams is a player who can chase down tackles and moves well for a defensive end.
The news isn’t the greatest for the Browns veteran heading into Week 3’s home opener against Carolina. Williams will start with a clean slate and try to come out of the game with a win for the second week in a row, all while avoiding another fine.
