Few NFL coaches know more about winning than the Chiefs’ Andy Reid, which makes his comments about the Miami Dolphins after Week 3 that much more notable.
The Chiefs enjoyed a win during their visit to Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday afternoon, leaving the Miami Dolphins still seeking their first taste of victory this season. It will have to wait — and the Dolphins will only get one more chance at a home win between now and November 1st.
Hard times. But as the Dolphins look to apply the lessons from this latest contest, it’s worth noting that their Week 3 opponent seems to see some promising seeds being laid in South Florida. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared what he said to Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley after the game.

“The one thing I mentioned to (Jeff Hafley) was his guys play hard and they play hard
every snap. That means they’re listening and trusting him and that’s a positive that he can build on and he’ll do that. He’s a sharp guy and he’s got a good staff. They play hard.”

Now at some point this Dolphins team is going to get tired of hearing effort as the default compliment that their group gets from opposing coaches. But for right now, it’s one of the best true measuring sticks that we have. Unfortunately, the team just has less to work with than most teams this season — and that means they need to play at a higher clip of effectiveness and consistency to ensure they close out games that are within their reach.
They didn’t manage that on Sunday against the Chiefs. But they did play a competitive football game. And they did play hard. Coach Reid sees that as a strong launch point for what is to come. And, for the record, Jeff Hafley agrees.
“I think for some of those guys that maybe weren’t sure if they believed, I think a lot of them now are starting to believe, and I think that’s very powerful. I thought we played more physical,” said Hafley. “In my opinion, we weren’t playing together as a team the way I envisioned it, the way I envisioned guys celebrating together, the way I envisioned guys cheering each other on, the way I envisioned our team, offense, defense, special teams coming together in the past two games. I didn’t feel it. It wasn’t good enough for me. And I thought today it was the best that it’s been.”
They’re starting to believe. And it sounds like Andy Reid believes the foundational piece in place, too. That’s not worth a win just yet, but it’s not nothing either.
