New York Jets get great news after a late-game injury scare to their top offensive weapon

The New York Jets lost 3 key offensive players to injuries against the Detroit Lions, but the first update on their No. 1 receiver is the news they wanted to hear.

The New York Jets got a scare late in the fourth quarter of their 31-24 loss to the Detroit Lions when wide receiver Garrett Wilson went down with an apparent injury. Wilson was coming across the middle on a dig route and quarterback Geno Smith attempted a low throw. Wilson was sandwiched in between two Lions defenders and took a pretty solid hit to the head. He would not return to the game.

The good news? Wilson is going to be just fine. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters after the game that Wilson had a concussion eval in the blue tent and cleared it, so Wilson will be good to go. It’s a big deal for a Jets offense that desperately needs its top playmaker on the field. An offense that showed a lot of good signs in the passing game against Detroit.

Wilson delivered before the scare

Before exiting late in the fourth quarter, Wilson put together his best performance of the young season. He hauled in 10 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, and nearly added another score late in the game. That’s the kind of production the Jets need from their No. 1 receiver week in and week out. Losing him for any stretch of time would have been a significant blow heading into Week 4 against the Chicago Bears.

The fact that Wilson cleared the concussion evaluation is the best possible outcome for New York. This Jets team is trying to build something, and Garrett Wilson is the centerpiece of the offense. Getting him back healthy and ready to go against Chicago is exactly the news the organization wanted to hear.

They are already down Omar Cooper Jr. and AD Mitchell, a third injury would have been unbearable.

More injury concerns for the Jets offense

Wilson wasn’t the only Jets player to go down against Detroit. Left guard Dylan Parham suffered a knee injury late in the game and did not return. Running back Breece Hall also left with a thigh injury and was unable to finish the contest.

Neither Parham nor Hall returned to the game, and their status remains uncertain heading into the week. Glenn told reporters that the Jets will have news on the status of those two players pretty soon, but they do not have it yet.

Losing Parham and Hall on top of the Wilson scare made for a rough afternoon injury-wise for the Jets. The offensive line and the running game are critical components of what New York is trying to do, and the Jets can’t afford to be without either player for an extended stretch.

Looking ahead to Week 4

I think the big takeaway here is that the Jets dodged a bullet with Garrett Wilson’s injury. Losing your best offensive weapon to a concussion would have been a tough pill to swallow, especially with the way Wilson played against the Lions. The Parham and Hall situations bear watching, but the early indication from Glenn is that more information is coming soon.

The Jets fell to 1-2 with their 31-24 loss to Detroit, and they need to get things right in a hurry with the Bears on deck. Getting Wilson back healthy is the first step. Now the Jets just need some good news on their left guard and their running back, and they can focus on getting back in the win column.
