San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans is considered day-to-day with a rib injury, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. After the scary scene that unfolded during yesterday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, this is about as good as the 49ers could have hoped for.

Evans left the game early after taking a helmet-to-rib hit from Cardinals safety Budda Baker as he came across the middle trying to catch a pass from quarterback Brock Purdy. He was seen being helped to the sideline and eventually carted off the field after a moment where he was visibly struggling to move and breathe.

Evans has been San Francisco’s true No. 1 receiver

Look, it was the last thing this team needed to see. The 49ers have dealt with injury struggles all season, and losing their top wideout felt like another gut punch in real time. The good news? It seems like Evans should be a go this coming week when San Francisco hosts the 2-1 Denver Broncos.

Before exiting yesterday’s game, Evans had three receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown. He was also part of a hook-and-ladder play to Deebo Samuel that resulted in an 80-yard touchdown. That kind of production is exactly why the 49ers brought him in. Evans has been a true No. 1 wide receiver for this team and has greatly impacted the MVP-type play we’ve seen from Purdy this season.

The 49ers’ receiver room can breathe easy

I think this is a bigger deal than people realize. San Francisco already had to shake up its receiver room after losing DeMarcus Robinson and De’Zhaun Stribling. It led to the team signing Brandon Cooks to the practice squad last week. If Evans had gone down for an extended stretch, the 49ers would have been in serious trouble at the position.

Instead, Evans being considered day-to-day means the 49ers likely won’t have to make another move at wide receiver. That’s a massive win for a team trying to keep everything together through a grueling season.

Getting Evans back on the field keeps Purdy’s weapons intact and keeps the offense humming. It also helps keep San Francisco in a strong position as they push deeper into the schedule. The 49ers are going to be just fine at receiver. That should have the entire building feeling a lot better heading into next week.
