The Dallas Cowboys need to start finding regular season wins before the conversation around head coach Brian Schottenheimer starts getting seriously uncomfortable.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer likes to call all adversity a “championship opportunity.” But right now, championships aren’t what he should worry about.
Winning regular season football games is. And it hasn’t been going great for him so far. Since he took over as head coach last year, the Cowboys have had a winning record one week. His team has had one winning streak (3 games in 2025). He is 8-11-1 as a head coach.
But there’s an even worse stat, albeit a simple one, that shows why his seat is getting increasingly warm going into Week 4 of the 2026 NFL season.
The Cowboys have a winning problem
Since the Cowboys beat the Kansas City Chiefs on last year’s Thanksgiving, they’re 0-6 against teams not named the Washington Commanders.
That’s a damning stat and it gets worse when you remember the Commanders started NFL journeyman Josh Johnson at quarterback for that one last year and the Cowboys faced Marcus Mariota for a full half in Week 2 of this season.
Simply put, the Cowboys need to start stacking wins. We talk a lot about Dallas losing big games because of the little details. But the truth is they’re not winning small or medium games either. And I’m not sure we get to call having one of the league’s worst defenses a “detail.”
Schottenheimer gets a chance to turn things around
Though Schottenheimer’s seat is getting hot after multiple coaching blunders on Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the Cowboys head coach has a good chance to stack wins coming up.
Dallas is slated to take on the 0-3 Houston Texans followed by the 1-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers who will be down QB Baker Mayfield. Those are not easy games but they’re certainly winnable.
The Cowboys need wins and so does Schottenheimer. Otherwise, the conversations may start getting really uncomfortable at the end of the 2026 season. The chat about culture and competitiveness only take you so far in the league.
