Matt LaFleur becomes the latest NFL coach to out-right say what the Bears already know about QB Tyson Bagent

Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent is getting ready for another start on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, and received some positive praise from rival head coach Matt LaFleur.

The Chicago Bears haven’t kept their feelings a secret when it comes to quarterback Tyson Bagent and what he means to this team and the ability his has to be one of the top 32 quarterbacks in the league.

Head coach Ben Johnson was very adamant about keeping Bagent on the team after the Bears received trade interest in the former undrafted quarterback back in February. And now, we’re seeing the benefits of why Johnson wanted to keep Bagent in Chicago.

With starting quarterback Caleb Williams dealing with a hamstring injury, the Bears turned to Bagent in the team’s Week 5 win over the New York Jets and will trot him out again as the starting quarterback on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Bagent played decent in Sunday’s win and made some high level throws over the middle of the field. He also lacked some conviction at times and had some turnover-worthy plays that the Bears would like to see cleaned up. Overall, he looked like a young quarterback who hadn’t started a regular season game in nearly three years.

Going into Sunday, Bagent should feel a lot more confident in leading this offense and he’s certainly a player the Packers aren’t overlooking going into this game.

“I see a really good quarterback,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur explained. “He throws with anticipation. He gets the ball out of his hands. He goes to the right spots. So, I mean, I know he’s their backup, but he could start for many teams in the league.”

Sunday will be another opportunity to prove himself as a starting quarterback, something now two head coaches in the NFL have out-right said he’s capable of. It will also be a road start for Bagent, who is 0-2 in his career on the road as a regular season starter.

“We’re just looking to get better from his first start to his next start,” Johnson said on Wednesday.

Will the Bears be willing to unleash Tyson Bagent’s full capabilities on Sunday?

Going back to last week’s game, the Bears really didn’t have to ask a whole lot of out Bagent. He just commanded the offense at a high level from an operation standpoint and relied on a strong run game to come away with the win. As I mentioned, he made some solid throws when he needed to, but he also left some opportunities out there.

“There’s probably a couple plays last week where I thought our second level throws were available to us and we didn’t pull the trigger on them,” Johnson explained. “That’s just one of those things we need to see it. It’d be encouraging from the coaching staff to him to say ‘You get the green light, man.’ You have a lot of confidence in how our pass catchers are playing right now… and so we’re going to need more of that this week.”

If the Bears give Bagent the green light and instill confidence in him to go out and rip it on Sunday, this would be a big opportunity for him to make his case to be a starter for another team in the future.

I didn’t feel like last week’s performance was enough to excite other teams, but he certainly will have that opportunity to change things in his favor on Sunday.
