Josh Heupel reveals when George MacIntyre found out he was starting at QB for Tennessee against Arkansas
George MacIntyre got a win in his first career start for the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel didn’t officially name a starting quarterback this week until moments before kickoff against Arkansas.
Reports early in the week indicated that sophomore George MacIntyre was going to start the game, but Heupel played coy throughout the week.
After the Vols’ 24-17 win on Saturday, Heupel was asked when the decision was made for MacIntyre to start against the Razorbacks.
Heupel revealed that Monday is when MacIntyre found out he was starting.
“Just with what (Faizon Brandon) was dealing with, he really didn’t rep during the course of the week,” said Heupel. “George knew on Monday that he was going to start this week, and we’ll continue to play it by ear as we keep going. The strength of one room can never be one guy. I know most of you guys are tired of me saying that, but that’s the truth of it. And we’ll keep growing.”
MacIntyre passed for 247 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the win.
For now, it’s unclear if MacIntyre will start next weekend against Alabama as Heupel isn’t ready to commit to either player at this time as the official starter.
