New York Jets rookie joins rare NFL history with dominant performance that proves team made the right decision in 2026 draft
New York Jets rookie David Bailey made life miserable for Deshaun Watson in the rain and the numbers behind his afternoon put him in rare company.
Has there been a better defensive player in the NFL today than New York Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey? I don’t think so.
Bailey, the 2nd overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, recorded three sacks in New York’s 17-12 win over the Cleveland Browns. He became the first NFL rookie since James Houston with the Detroit Lions in 2022 to post three sacks in a single game. Bailey was the best player on the field in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Through the early slate of games, he may have been the best defensive player in the entire league, period.
David Bailey’s numbers put him in rare company
Three sacks will grab the headlines, but the pressure numbers show just how dominant he was. Bailey generated nine pressures, including five quick pressures, according to Next Gen Stats. Those nine pressures are tied for the most by a rookie in a single game since Jared Verse in Week 7 of 2024. He also added four quarterback hits.
Zoom out, and the picture looks even better. Bailey leads all rookies in pressures with 26 and in quick pressures with nine. That kind of production isn’t a one-game fluke. It shows a young pass rusher who has been winning his matchups week after week and finally got home in a big way.
Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson felt it all afternoon. Cleveland surrendered eight sacks, and Watson rarely had a clean pocket to work from. Bailey was the biggest reason why. He got to Watson on multiple occasions and made the Browns’ offensive line look overmatched for most of the game.
Rain couldn’t slow down the Jets pass rush
You would have figured this one would turn into a defensive slugfest given the rain in East Rutherford. Instead, the conditions were good enough for both teams to drop back and throw the football plenty of times.
Cleveland just couldn’t do it successfully. Every time the Browns tried to get something going through the air, No. 31 was there to blow it up.
Look, 17 points isn’t going to win you many games in the NFL. The Jets’ offense didn’t light up the scoreboard, but it didn’t have to. The defense kept New York in this game from start to finish and gave it the chance to close out a win. When your pass rush is collapsing the pocket like that, a low-scoring game plays right into your hands.
Jets made the right call in the Draft
Heading into the draft, the big debate was whether the Jets would take David Bailey or Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese. Plenty of people had strong opinions on both sides. Don’t get me wrong, Reese is playing very well for the New York Giants right now. He’s a good football player, and the Giants should be happy with what they’re getting from him.
But the Jets needed a guy who could change games off the edge, and that’s exactly what Bailey has been. A rookie leading his class in pressures and putting up a three-sack, nine-pressure performance is the kind of player you build a defense around. It certainly looks like the Jets made the best decision possible for their team and their franchise.
It is the Jets, and fans have been burned by high picks before. This one feels different. If Bailey keeps playing like this, I believe he’s going to be squarely in the Defensive Rookie of the Year conversation, and New York finally has a franchise pass rusher to build around for years to come.
