New York Jets rookie gives perfect answer to question about outside noise that should have fans thrilled about his future

Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey had a heck of a game against the Cleveland Browns. But the most important thing to me, was what Bailey said after the game, when asked about his performance.

Did David Bailey make a statement against the Cleveland Browns? He absolutely did, and the way he handled it afterward might be the best part of the whole day.

New York Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey, the 2nd overall pick in the draft, was asked after Sunday’s 17-12 win over the Browns whether he made a statement after all the outside noise surrounding his play. Bailey’s full answer:

“I’m not really on social media, so I can’t really speak on what was said. All that I feel like matters is what my coaches and my teammates are telling me.”

That’s a perfect response. It’s also one more reason the Jets absolutely nailed the 2nd pick.

David Bailey’s historic day against Cleveland

Let’s start with the game itself. Bailey recorded three sacks in New York’s win over Cleveland. He became the first NFL rookie since James Houston in 2022 to post three sacks in a single game. He’s also the first Jets rookie to pull it off since Hugh Douglas in 1995.

Make no mistake, Bailey was the best player on the field in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It wasn’t close.

The numbers go beyond the box score, too. Bailey generated nine pressures, including five quick pressures. Those nine pressures tied for the most by a rookie in a single game since Jared Verse in Week 7 of 2024.

Look, the Jets’ defensive line was embarrassed in Chicago a week ago, and Bailey was part of that. New York flipped the script against the Browns, piling up eight sacks on QB Deshaun Watson. Bailey was the biggest piece of that turnaround because he harassed Watson and got after him all game long.

That’s how a young player responds to a rough week.

Why Bailey’s answer matters as much as the sacks

Now, here’s the second reason I think the Jets nailed this pick, regardless of what Bailey does on the field. His answer was everything.

First, the mindset. David Bailey made it clear the only voices he cares about are the ones inside the Jets building. That is the best mindset a player can have, especially a young player in this league. Listen to the people you’re with every day. Those people know what your job requires on a down-in, down-out basis each game. Do that, and you’ll be fine.

Second, the social media part really struck me. Social media is a huge part of today’s world, especially for young athletes, and it’s loaded with distractions.

To be clear, it’s completely fine for Bailey to have social media. I’m not debating that at all. Still, it’s refreshing to hear a rookie say he isn’t really on it much, at least during the season. There’s so much negativity out there surrounding sports, and the NFL is no exception.

A 2nd overall pick hears every take, good or bad, whether he wants to or not. Bailey choosing to tune that out says a lot about how he’s wired.

The Jets have their guy

It is the Jets, so fans have learned to brace for the worst. I get it. A rough outing in Chicago was enough to get the noise going on a rookie who’s barely started his career, as well as the rest of the team. In fact, those who keep up with New York have been conditioned to expect the bad play to continue.

But Bailey keeping things simple and trusting the people around him is excellent, and that’s a big deal for a franchise that needs its young cornerstones to block out the chaos. Pair that mindset with a three-sack, nine-pressure performance, and you have exactly what New York was hoping for when it turned in the card.

I’m high on this kid. If this is what Bailey looks like when he ignores the outside noise, the rest of the league is going to hear a lot more about him this season. The Jets got this pick right. If he stays healthy, he’ll be right in the race for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
