Seahawks legend has hilarious reaction to 49ers star Mike Evans’ viral trash-talking exchange with Seattle defender
Mike Evans had a hilarious response when Seahawks cornerback Trevon Diggs started talking trash during the 49ers’ win over Seattle. Even Richard Sherman couldn’t help but react.
Who talks trash to Mike Evans? Apparently someone he didn’t recognize, at least at first. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver had a viral moment against the Seattle Seahawks when cornerback Trevon Diggs started jawing at him. Evans responded by turning Diggs around and checking the name on the back of his jersey, as if to ask, “Who are you?”
It was one of the funniest moments of the NFL season. It even drew a reaction from Seahawks legend and former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, a man who knows a thing or two about trash talk.
Mike Evans plays it off after the game
Evans was asked about the exchange after the game, and he didn’t exactly confirm it was a calculated shot.
“I honestly didn’t know it was him. I was like, ‘Who are you?’ Then I looked and made sure, oh, it’s (expletive) Diggs,” Evans said.
Now, Evans downplayed the whole thing and treated it like a genuine mistake. Whether you believe that is up to you. Either way, it was a hilarious moment from No. 5.
Sherman clearly loved it. He posted his reaction on X:
That reaction cracked me up. Sherman is obviously best known for his Seahawks career, but he played for both teams and was one of the great trash talkers of his era. When a guy with that résumé says he wishes he’d thought of something, you know it landed. Props to Mike Evans.
Evans has been outstanding for the 49ers
Look, the jersey check makes for great video content. The bigger story is how good Evans has been for San Francisco.
Mike Evans is without a doubt the 49ers’ top target on the perimeter, and he has given this offense exactly what it was missing. Against Seattle, Evans finished with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. He also hauled in a two-point conversion late in the game to give the Niners a three-point lead.
And he did all of that while playing through fractured ribs. Evans suffered the injury in San Francisco’s win over the Arizona Cardinals and has played through it for the past two weeks. That is toughness, plain and simple.
Evans took over when the 49ers needed him most
The timing of his production matters, too. Deebo Samuel and Jacob Cowing both went down with injuries in the fourth quarter, which left the 49ers thin at receiver in a tight division game. Evans heated up right when things got dicey. Brock Purdy kept going to him late, and a bunch of Evans’ production came in that fourth quarter. He’s the reason San Francisco got over the edge against the Seahawks.
That’s what a true No. 1 receiver does. When the depth chart gets thin and the game is on the line, the quarterback knows exactly where he’s going with the football. Right now, for the 49ers, that’s Evans.
I’ll tell you this much: Mike Evans is an awesome player, and he seems to be just as great a person in that 49ers locker room. His personality is on the quieter side off the field, but moments like this show he’s quite the character, too.
The Diggs incident probably won’t turn into a huge deal. It doesn’t need to. Evans got the last laugh, gave Sherman something to tweet about, and then went out and won the game for San Francisco. If he keeps producing like this, ribs and all, plenty more cornerbacks around the league are going to learn his name the hard way.
