The work continues for the Miami Dolphins. Yes, Miami is plugging away and hoping for a win soon. But the roster tinkering is an endless job. And Miami’s got a fresh one to kick off their bye week.

The Dolphins said goodbye to wide receiver Ryan Miller on Tuesday. And, in his place, they’ve claimed WR Jared Wayne from the Houston Texans. It’s the latest example of Miami’s roster churn — and you shouldn’t overlook a pair of motivating factors for this exchange.

The Miami Dolphins’ roster churn turns to wide receivers and there’s one obvious reason why

So why Wayne? Well, let’s start with the obvious. There are two phases of the game that Miami can point to with this transaction. The first is a reliable depth receiver that can play with physicality. Miller offered some of that — but Miller was a new face in 2026. Wayne is a familiar one. To Bobby Slowik, that is. Wayne spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Houston Texans. That includes two seasons overlapping with Bobby Slowik, who was Houston’s offensive coordinator in 2023 and 2024. Wayne’s rookie season overlapped with Slowik’s first year.

But the other half of this coin belongs to the third phase of the game: special teams. Miami is struggling in this phase of the game. And while Miller has most special teams experience than Wayne does, it’s probably a safe assumption that performance was a factor in a chance.

Wayne was getting elevated opportunities in Houston this season before the Marvin Harrison Jr. trade. Both on special teams and on offense. And now Miami will look to parlay that into an upgrade in the bottom half of their wide receiver room. At least, thanks to Slowik’s history, they generally know what kind of player they’re getting.
