A recent video on the Chicago Bears YouTube channel proves that the Bears hit the jackpot during the 2022 NFL Draft.
“1920 Football Drive” is the Bears’ behind-the-scenes YouTube video series that recaps everything going on behind the doors of Halas Hall.
The most recent edition was released on Wednesday, and is titled “How Poles and Eberflus reshaped the Bears roster.” It is focused on the Bears’ offseason acquisitions, scouting process, and the 2022 NFL Draft.
The draft room footage in the video shows Bears General Manager Ryan Poles telling someone in the room to “write down Gordon 1…Brisker 2” at the top of the Bears’ big board ahead of NFL Draft day two. Chicago’s first selection in the draft, which came in the second round at 39th overall, could not have gone better.
After the Bears selected Washington CB Kyler Gordon with the 39th pick, Bears assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham was in disbelief at the team’s fortune:
“Are you s***ing me? We did the mock. We simulated this the whole time and we were like ‘this dude’s not going to be there,’” Cunningham exclaimed to Poles in the draft room.
Nonetheless, Gordon was available and the Bears got their guy. The good fortune didn’t stop there. The second best player on the Bears board entering the night was Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker, who fell to the Bears at pick 48.
The Bears later took Tennessee WR Velus Jones Jr. to round out day two at the draft and complete a “big three” of draft picks to immediately impact the team.
“We add three players that I know are going to help our team get better,” Ryan Poles said of the draftees. “They are going to improve our team in the playmaking. They are going to improve our team in the locker room and the culture that we’re trying to build.”
The backstage footage released by the Bears should get fans pumped up. Going with two defensive backs in the second round may not have been the way Bears fans saw draft night playing out, but knowing the new executives got their favorite players is exciting.
This is not a GM just praising a player after he’s been drafted. This is video evidence that the Bears scouted and graded Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker above every other player on day two, and came away with both of them. Seeing how perfectly it fell for the Bears also explains why they opted to not take a WR until the third round.
Hopefully the excitement the front office had for these guys translates into excitement for the fans when they take the field this fall.
