Florida Gators baskeball gets massive news the rest of country will view as devastating
Going into the 2025-2026 season, the Florida Gators were seen as national championship frontrunners, and that will continue.
After a massively disappointing end to the season in the round of 32 against the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Florida Gators had some work to do. Head coach Todd Golden had some recruiting to do in order to maintain their national championship aspirations.
After getting forwards Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon to return, the Gators got massive news with center Rueben Chinyelu announcing that he is withdrawing from the NBA Draft and will return to the Gators next season.
Rueben Chinyelu returning to Florida Gators for 2026-2027 season
It’s a massive coup for the Gators to get Chinyelu back. He was the Nasmith Defensive Player of Year award winner, and was a dominant force in the paint. Offensively, Chinyelu was more than good enough, especially with Haugh and Condon on the front line.
“It’s just going to be so much fun,” Chinyelu told Andy Katz at the NBA Scouting Combine. “And we have new guys coming in, so I think it’s just gonna be super fun. And you already know how our frontline looked last year, so putting that with the new guys coming in, I think it’s going to be a super, super fun year.”
The return of Chinyelu means the Gators are going to return four of their five starters from last year. The good thing about their fifth spot in the starting lineup is it being filled by Denzel Aberdeen. He was with the Gators in their national championship season in 2025 before transferring to the Kentucky Wildcats for last season. He returns to Gainesville to take the starting spot of Xavian Lee, who ran out of eligibility.
The Gators are going to be a dominant force in the world of college basketball next year, and it’s brutal news for the rest of the country. There isn’t another upper echelon team in the country who will have this much returning talent and experience, and it will maximize their national championship hopes.
