Miami Hurricanes suffer a brutal loss before the halftime whistle against Wake Forest
Miami’s offense suffered a potentially significant setback on Friday night in Winston-Salem.
There wasn’t too much that went wrong on the field for the Miami Hurricanes in the first half against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Miami outgained Wake 303-88 in the half behind an incredible 20 passes without an incompletion by Hurricanes QB Darian Mensah to go with 193 passing yards and two touchdowns. After allowing a touchdown on Wake’s opening drive, Corey Hetherman’s defense locked in and allowed just 13 yards of offense the rest of the half.
It was almost perfect. Unfortunately for Mario Cristobal, the injury bug struck an important part of their roster.
With Miami leading 14-7 in the second quarter, CharMar “Marty” Brown broke off a 32-yard run down to the one-yard line. Unfortunately, on the tackle, he suffered a lower body injury and, per the broadcast, could not put weight on his leg and had to be helped off the field. He was then carted from the sideline to the locker room.

Mike Monaco of the ESPN broadcast referred to the injury as “gruesome” and that they weren’t going to show a replay. It did not appear to be more than a simple tackle at the moment, but clearly they had a replay that did not look good.
Losing Brown would be a heavy blow to Miami’s offense. Mark Fletcher, Jr. is the 1A in that offense, and for good reason as he’s a tremendous player. But Brown is 1B, and his pass protection, catching ability, and ball security are top notch. He’s arguably the most well rounded running back on the roster, and losing him will be felt particularly on passing downs.
We’ll see what Mario Cristobal says in the coming hours and days, but for now, it looks like the Hurricanes could be without a very important player for a while.
