The Miami Hurricanes have put together a truly remarkable 2027 recruiting class, and Mario Cristobal didn’t have to look far to secure its crown jewel. Two-way five-star athlete A’Mir Sears reclassified to the 2027 class from 2028, and he committed to the hometown Hurricanes a few days later.

Last weekend, Sears showed just how ridiculously good of a player he is against then-national No. 1 Bishop Gorman. In Columbus’ 33-28 win, he totaled two receiving touchdowns and three interceptions. It was a performance that people talk about for years. And it appears to be one that’s sent a shockwave through the recruiting world.

According to Rivals recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong, Sears’ electric performance has gotten the attention of both top current commits and uncommitted players.

Wiltfong said he heard that Sears has been called a “flag bearer” for the 2027 class and that “prospects committed elsewhere” have taken notice of Sears’ play. He also mentioned that Miami is alive in the recruitments of both five-star OT Mark Matthews (Fort Lauderdale; St. Thomas Aquinas) and five-star DL David “DJ” Jacobs (Roswell, GA; Blessed Trinity Catholic).

Matthews, a top 10 player and number one offensive tackle in the nation by Rivals and 247 Sports, pulled the trigger in favor of Texas A&M back in May over the hometown Hurricanes. He has seemed to be staying strong in the Aggies corner, but Miami has continued to at least keep that recruitment from getting shut down to this point, it appears.

Jacobs also had Miami as a finalist this year before he committed to Ohio State back on December 29, two days before the Hurricanes defeated the Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl in the first College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Miami and Tennessee have been mentioned this offseason as still being in the mix, but for now, Ohio State has kept his pledge.

Wiltfong’s assessment stands to logic, as the Hurricanes were in the mix for both players before they committed to their current schools. Putting together one of the nation’s elite classes will only help Cristobal’s chances of pushing his foot further in the door as he works to pull off a couple of potentially program-changing flips.

Matthews will get to see Sears up close and personal this weekend, as Columbus and St. Thomas Aquinas square off in what should be one of the best national high school football games of the entire year.
