The Texas Longhorns have lost their second straight game after being ranked No. 1 overall. This time, it wasn’t to a hated rival in the Oklahoma Sooners. They lost at home to the Florida Gators.

And it was the same story as it’s been all season: bad offensive football. In fact, the defense played well for most of the game. In the second half, they started to get gashed, but it’s hard when the offense provides little to no help. The offense as a whole was terrible, including the quarterback play. Head coach Steve Sarkisian will have to take a wide look at everything.

“I just felt like we didn’t play good offensive football. We did not play good offensive football,” Sarkisian told reporters after the loss to Florida when asked about evaluating Arch Manning’s performance. “So, everything is going to be evaluated.”

Texas continues to play opposite of what their strengths are on offense

This team has the most expensive roster in college football, or at least that’s been reported a few times. Sure, a chunk of that is likely due to Colin Simmons, the best edge rusher in the country, Manning, a household-name QB, and Cam Coleman, the top transfer portal player this past cycle. But they’re not built to play the way Sarkisian keeps calling the offense.

All of these long, developing deep routes that are being called don’t work with this team. Most of the time, Manning doesn’t have time to throw it. When he does have time, he doesn’t have enough time to let those routes develop fully. The offensive line is very bad. So when the run game isn’t working, and the defense knows you’re going to pass, but you don’t have enough time to do those, the defense can do whatever they want.

They need to be getting into some more quick game stuff. Texas has to pass to set up the run, not the other way around, which is what you usually hear. Sarkisian knows more football than I will ever know. So, there has to be a reason they’re doing what they’re doing. Regardless, something has to change. If they keep playing this way, they’ll have no shot at the College Football Playoff.
