The NFL announced 37 compensatory choices for the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday. As every year, the league awards this additional draft picks for teams that suffered a "net loss of compensatory free agents."

This is determined by a formula that takes into account salary, playing time, and postseason honors.

To keep it simple, if a team loses more key free agents than it gains in any given offseason, they'll be compensated for it with draft picks the following year.

This year, the Dallas Cowboys were among the biggest winners in the formula as they're tied for third-most compensatory selections in the league:

T-1. L.A. Rams, 4.

T-1. San Francisco 49ers, 4.

T-3. Arizona Cardinals, 3.

T-3. Dallas Cowboys, 3.

(Excluding special comp picks awarded for factors other than the compensatory free agent netting formula)

The Cowboys are specifically getting the following comp picks for the upcoming NFL Draft:

  • 5th Round, 169th overall
  • 5th Round, 176th overall
  • 6th Round, 212th overall

Per the NFL's press release, the Cowboys gained the compensatory picks due to the losses of Randy Gregory, Connor Williams, and Cedrick Wilson.
