Safety Tyrann Mathieu, a three-time Pro-Bowler, is the top free agent left on the market and the Dallas Cowboys are reportedly the favorites to sign him.

Andrew Fillipponi, who covers the Pittsburgh Steelers for 93.7 The Fan, reported on Friday that he believes the Cowboys are the team most likely to sign Mathieu.

Fillipponi also noted that Mathieu signing with a team isn’t imminent and might not even happen until after the 2022 NFL Draft (which takes place the final weekend in April).

Mathieu said earlier this week that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has called him recently, though it seems doubtful that Pittsburgh will sign the Honey Badger. The Steelers don’t typically give contracts to players looking for a second or third big deal in free agency.

The Cowboys don’t need to sign a safety. Mathieu, however, would certainly upgrade the Dallas defense. The former LSU star is a versatile defender who would bring elite toughness and leadership to Dan Quinn’s defense.

Ultimately, I’d be surprised if the Cowboys signed Mathieu. But there seems to be some noise there, so we’ll keep an eye on Mathieu’s market as it develops.
