The Detroit Lions cuts have begun. The team has released veteran defensive tackle Christian Covington.
The Lions signed Covington back in May after he had spent time with the Texans, Cowboys, Bengals and Chargers. He had started 4 games for the Bengals so there was thought that he could be a part of the Lions interior defensive line going into the regular season when he signed.
It just never happened for Covington. He had a very quiet camp and a quiet preseasons that saw him put up five tackles and half a sack in three games. IsaIah Buggs, Brodric Martin and Benito Jones got ahead of him and never looked back.
Releasing Covington on Saturday is the Lions doing him a favor. He now has a couple days to find a home before the league is flooded with guys trying to find homes. Covington shouldn't have a hard time. There's probably a lot of teams looking for interior defensive line depth out there.
