Many were shocked on Tuesday when the Detroit Lions released veteran running back Craig Reynolds and left themselves with just two running backs on the roster. It turns out it was just a ploy to maneuver somethings around on the roster and now Reynolds is back.
Here's what happened. Craig Reynolds had no dead money on his contract. Therefor the Lions were able to release him at no cost. Now that Okwara is on the injured reserve list, that opens a spot back up for Reynolds.
If the Lions would have put Okwara on the injured reserve on Tuesday, he would have had to be out for the season. If they place him there on Wednesday, the Lions can bring him back after four games. That's why they needed the roster spot that Reynolds would have taken up on Tuesday.
That's some pretty smart maneuvering by Brad Holmes and company, even if they did risk Reynolds getting signed away by another team. Which certainly could have happened if a better deal came along. Anyhow, Reynolds is back and will be taking up the Lions running back three spot.
