Colts reveal exactly what they want in a quarterback
The Colts have an idea of what they are looking for.
The Indianapolis Colts are in search of a new franchise quarterback. That has to be the primary objective for the franchise this offseason as the Shane Steichen era gets underway.
Fortunately, the Colts have multiple options in this draft class alone to consider.
Currently sitting with the No. 4 overall draft pick, Indianapolis would almost certainly like to come away with one of Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, or Will Levis. Each of those four possess strengths that teams covet.
Whether the Colts eventually trade up to get their guy or stay put remains to be seen. That said, Indianapolis is making it clear what they are looking for in a signal caller.
"I think accuracy, decision making and the ability to create [offense] are the three things that I look at in a quarterback," Steichen said during his introductory press conference.
Three important qualities: accuracy, decision making, and the ability to create. Every team is need of a player behind center that fits that description. Steichen has been around some productive passers in his career, which should only help the franchise in their pursuit.
"I think those all three things are very important but obviously, above the neck, the players that I've been around – Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Philip Rivers, they all have one thing in common. They're obsessed with their craft. If you can find that in a quarterback, you'll probably have some success," Steichen added.
Furthermore, general manager Chris Ballard simplified it even further. To him, there's one important quality that a quarterback possesses and there's not much of a need to overanalyze it,
"One that wins," Ballard said.
Young and Stroud fit that description best of the four in contention. Young has a Heisman Trophy to his name and has played for a national championship. Stroud, in his own right, helped lead Ohio State to a College Football Playoff appearance this past season.
Getting the quarterback right is so crucial for the Indianapolis Colts – both for their short-term and the future. It appears that the franchise has a good idea of what they are looking for in their next signal caller.
