It took a little longer than expected but Tennessee star point guard Kennedy Chandler finally got chosen in the NBA Draft on Thursday night. The San Antonio Spurs drafted Chandler in the second round at No. 38 overall but they quickly traded him to a team that many people in Tennessee wanted to see him join, the Memphis Grizzlies.

Chandler playing for the Grizzlies is a match seemingly made in heaven not just because of Chandler’s great skillset but because of the fact that his hometown is Memphis. Chandler grew up in Memphis and attended Briarcrest Christian School in the area.

Add on to all of that the fact that Chandler has had a friendship with star Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant for quite some time, and it seems like this was all meant to be. Morant, who won NBA Rookie of the Year in 2020 and was a league All-Star in 2022, let his thoughts on the situation be known in a series of very excited tweets…

Ja, just like many Vol fans, is ecstatic to see Chandler staying in Tennessee. It hurt seeing him go pro, but if he had to leave the Big Orange, it’s nice to see him playing just down the road on a team close to his home.
