A 2027 three-star quarterback from Sevierville, TN announced his college commitment on Tuesday, with a little help from Jon Gruden.

Gruden, who owns land in East Tennessee (if you followed the 2012 or 2017 Vols coaching searches you already knew that), posted a video on Tuesday of Cooper Newman announcing his commitment to UConn.

Newman, 6-foot-2/208 pounds, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 56 quarterback in the nation and the No. 41 player in the state of Tennessee.

Newman said in the video that he feels like he’s a good fit in UConn’s offense.

UConn hired Jason Candle, who was previously at Toledo, to replace Jim Mora as the Huskies’ head coach this past winter.

Newman, by the way, won’t be the only player with an East Tennessee connection at UConn.

Former Vols quarterback Jake Merklinger transferred to UConn earlier this offseason.
