Milton, who is entering his second season in the NFL, was traded from the New England Patriots to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason.
The former Vol is battling for the backup quarterback job in Dallas during training camp.
On Monday, Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer detailed the Cowboys' plans for the team's quarterbacks during the preseason.
Schottenheimer noted that Dallas will be "smart" with starting quarterback Dak Prescott — which essentially means that Milton and the other quarterbacks on the roster should see some increased on-field reps.
"Now that [Dak] is in the over 30 club, we're going to be smart with some of the things that we do with him," said Schottenheimer. "[Dak] is anti-that — he wants to do as much as possible. Luckily, we have the trump card with him on that. But in all seriousness, Dak understands that there's a smart way to train. We've got two other quarterbacks we're really excited to evaluate.
Joe Milton's a guy that we're really excited about. We want to see him play a bunch. And then Will Grier is a guy that's been around. So although Dak's not going to like it as much, he's very aware that we're going to be intelligent with what he does [during training camp]."
Vols fans should get their first look at Milton on August 9 when the Cowboys kick off their preseason schedule against the Los Angeles Rams.
Dallas will also play the Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons in the preseason.
