On Saturday, for the first time in nearly two decades, a Manning will take the field at Neyland Stadium in orange and white.

But he’s not the quarterback that Tennessee Vols fans will be cheering for.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who will be in burnt orange and white, will make his first visit to Neyland Stadium on Saturday as he hopes to guide the Longhorns to their first SEC win of the season.

On the other sideline, Vols true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, who will also be in orange and white (Pantone 151 c orange, though), will be making his first career SEC start. And unlike Arch, he’ll be cheered loudly by Tennessee fans.

Faizon Brandon has a “Manning-like” trait that could help Tennessee against Texas

There’s already a ton of noise around this game. Combine the noise and the atmosphere (ESPN’s College GameDay will be in town), and it’s easy to see how it could be a bit much for Brandon, who just turned 18 three months ago.

But Brandon has shown remarkable poise so far this season. If any 18-year-old can handle this, it’s him.

“I think what we see from him (Brandon) is that he gets who he is and he gets what it is,” said Voice of the Vols Mike Keith on Monday on WNML’s SportsTalk. “And from that standpoint, that reminds me of a Manning. The Mannings have always understood who they are and what it’s all about. They get it because of Archie, and then because of Peyton and Eli. And, I mean, Arch gets it. Arch understands it.

“I think Faizon Brandon is the same sort of guy. He knows who he is. He knows what his expectation is, and he has the ability to kind of keep it in the road that way — which I think is a great thing. And his teammates will help him, too. They obviously think a lot of him. They have a lot of trust in him. I don’t think there’s going to be any problem there.”

It’s not unusual for the moment to get big for a young quarterback making his first career SEC start. But it doesn’t sound like that’s going to be an issue for Brandon.

After all, this is who Brandon has been since he was a freshman in high school — he just has that unique ability to stay calm and even-keeled in the biggest of moments.

And Saturday against Texas will certainly be the biggest moment he’s experienced so far in his career.
