The Tennessee Vols’ offensive strength early this season has been the run game.

Tennessee has rushed for 628 yards through the first two games of the season.

It’s not a big surprise that Tennessee is leaning on the run game right now. The Vols don’t want to put too much on true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon as he settles into the starting role, and they don’t want to show their hand before they get into SEC play.

Some fans, however, have questioned why the Vols aren’t throwing the ball more.

ESPN’s Cole Cubelic had a message for those fans this week.

“I just thought the whole offensive operation was clean,” said Cubelic on The Cube Show while reviewing Tennessee’s win over Georgia Tech. “And again, it’s a team that understands this is where we need to be for this game. There might be some Tennessee fans complaining about not throwing the football enough, but if you are, stop. Go win the game, and what the game constitutes is what you run, and that’s where they ran the offense in the second half. And they were dominant with it.”

Cubelic, a former Auburn offensive lineman, also dished out some big praise for Tennessee’s offensive line.

“The offensive line is ripping right now,” said Cubelic. “I mean, David Sanders had a couple of big blocks in this game. He gave great effort in the run game. I love seeing how he’s operating. Wendell Moe, he’s just a bouncer — like, throwing people out of the club. I thought he had a really nice game as well.

“They’re playing high level football, high energy football. They are moving people at the point of attack, and they’re getting extra help from the tight ends when they can roll it. And I know they’re now going to be down a guy (tight end Ethan Davis), but when they [use] the extra tight ends and they use the big bodies, they’re going to be able to cause problems. And that’s what they’ve been able to do. The left side of that offensive line, though, was dominant.”

Tennessee isn’t going to win every play, and there’s obviously some stuff they have to clean up before they get into SEC play, but the Vols are playing some good football early this season.
