Former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier usually doesn’t pass up an opportunity to take a shot at the Tennessee Vols.

That’s why it may surprise some fans that he’s picking Tennessee to beat the Texas Longhorns in Knoxville this weekend.

“I think Tennessee is ready to pull the upset over Texas,” said Spurrier to On3’s Chris Low. “The Vols can beat them in Knoxville.”

One reason why Spurrier thinks the Vols will win is because he watched a 4-8 Florida team under Billy Napier beat the Longhorns last season.

“Hell, we beat them down here last year, and we went 4-8,” said Spurrier.

This isn’t the first time that Spurrier has taken a contrarian view on Texas.

In 2025, before Arch Manning’s first season as the starting quarterback at Texas, Spurrier questioned if the former five-star recruit was worthy of the hype.

“They’ve got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman,” said Spurrier on Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “And my question is, if [Arch] was this good, how come that they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? And [Ewers] was a seventh round pick (in the 2025 NFL Draft). 

“You’ll have to ask Coach Sark, you know, how come you played that one instead of this one? Hopefully, [Sark will say] because we thought he was better than that one. Isn’t why you play one guy and not the other? Unless it’s discipline, and there was no disciplinary [action with Arch].”

Tennessee and Texas will kick off at noon on Saturday.
