A couple of quarterbacks who were coached in college by Josh Heupel are set to make starts in the NFL in Week 9.
ESPN reported on Wednesday afternoon that former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton will start for the Philadelphia Eagles this week against the New York Giants.
Milton started the season on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before getting signed by the Eagles a few weeks ago.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles are starting Milton in part because of his mobility.
Starter Jalen Hurts is out for the rest of the season with blood clots. Tanner McKee started the Eagles’ last three games.
The other Heupel-coached quarterback who will start this week is Drew Lock, who played for Heupel for two seasons at Missouri (Heupel was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach).
Lock will start for the Seattle Seahawks against the Arizona Cardinals.
“Coach Heupel played a huge role in my development both on and off the field,” said Lock when Tennessee hired Heupel in 2021. “His knowledge of the game helped me become the player I am today. He taught me principles that I still apply today in the NFL. He is competitive, driven and always looks out for his players. Tennessee players will thrive in the culture he creates.”
Unlike Milton, who will be making his first career NFL start, this will be Lock’s 29th career NFL start (and his second this season…oddly enough he also made his other start against the Cardinals earlier this season).
