Former Vols football coach Phillip Fulmer set to be honored by Tennessee in one of the coolest ways possible
It’s going to be an awesome honor for legendary former Tennessee Vols football coach Phillip Fulmer.
Former Tennessee Vols head coach Phillip Fulmer will be getting one of the coolest honors a coach can get. According to a release from Tennessee, Fulmer, who guided the Vols to the 1998 national championship, will receive a statue outside of Neyland Stadium.
The statue will stand alongside the already existing statue of General Robert Neyland, as well as a new statue for longtime athletic director and football coach Doug Dickey.
“The new Champions Corner will serve as a centerpiece to the plaza outside Gate 9 on the southwest side of Neyland Stadium,” a press release from Tennessee reads. “Champions Corner will honor the Vols’ national championship head coaches for year-round viewing, including Gen. Robert Neyland, Doug Dickey and Phillip Fulmer. In 2010, a statue was dedicated to Gen. Neyland on the west side of the stadium that bears his name. It moved to its permanent home this summer. Statues recognizing Dickey and Fulmer will be unveiled later this fall.”
It’s a fitting honor for Fulmer, who is one of the very few Vols coaches to deliver a national championship. Tennessee went 13-0 in 1998 to claim the first BCS title.
Fulmer’s life has been dedicated to the University of Tennessee as a player, an assistant coach, a head coach, and even an athletic director. There’s no one who loves the program more than him.
This is certainly well-deserved recognition for everything Fulmer has meant to Tennessee football. It’ll be pretty cool to see him honored in such a unique and permanent way outside the most iconic venue in college football.
