Former Vol Rickey Gibson shows Texas A&M exactly what they added during his first practice with the Aggies
Rickey Gibson III left the Tennessee Vols last winter to join the Texas A&M Aggies.
It didn’t take long for former Tennessee Vols cornerback Rickey Gibson III to make an impression with the Texas A&M Aggies.
The former Vol, who missed almost the entire 2025 season due to an injury in Tennessee’s season opener, came down with an impressive interception in his first fall practice with the Aggies.
Gibson, who spent the first three seasons of his career with the Vols, surprisingly transferred to Texas A&M in January.
“I didn’t think Rickey Gibson was going to go in the portal,” said VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs in January. “I thought that one was worked out. And I thought he was good to go to come back to Tennessee. I think when a couple of coaching changes happened in the back end — with Willie Martinez and Earnest Thomas III not coming back, I think that probably prompted that for him to move on. And obviously, he toyed with moving on a year ago on a couple of different occasions. So that one surprised me. I thought he would be back.”
ESPN’s Steve Muench suggested earlier this offseason that Gibson could be a big “steal” for Texas A&M.
“Gibson missed most of 2025 with an injury, but his sophomore tape is very impressive,” noted Muench. “He’s a quick-twitched lockdown corner with great instincts. He’s sticky in man coverage with fluid hips to mirror, turn and run and close separation fast. He has a ball hawk mentality with great anticipation skills. He’s aggressive and physical as an edge setter and a strong open field tackler. Could be a steal in this portal window if he bounces back fully from injury.”
Vols running back DeSean Bishop praised Gibson last month at SEC Media Days.
“Shout out Rickey, that’s my dog,” said Bishop. “I miss you, man. It’s all love to him. He’s a good competitor and a good guy. I believe he’s gonna make tons of plays over there at Texas A&M. They’re getting a good guy. It hurt to see him go, but I wish him the best of luck this season.”
Tennessee replaced Gibson with Auburn transfer cornerback Kayin Lee, who actually ranked higher than Gibson in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings.
