Josh Heupel provides status update on Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar as Vols begin preparations for Kentucky
The Vols’ starting QB took a couple of hard shots in Tennessee’s loss to Alabama.
The Tennessee Vols dropped a tough one to Alabama on Saturday night, 37-20, but one of the most worrisome moments took place in the first half. QB Joey Aguilar took a shot that appeared to cause him some discomfort in the back of his head and/or neck area. He later took another shot in the same area while he was sliding from Alabama’s James Smith, which resulted in a personal foul penalty.
While Aguilar finished the game, it’s never good when your QB is dealing with any kind of injury, particularly with one involving the head and neck area.
Fortunately, according to Josh Heupel at his Monday press conference, Aguilar is OK, and he’ll be good to go on Saturday against Kentucky in Lexington.
Josh Heupel says Joey Aguilar will be ‘ready to go’ against Kentucky
“Obviously, a couple of hits that Joey took, but he’ll be ready to go this Saturday,” Heupel said when asked about his status.
Keeping Aguilar upright and healthy is crucial to finishing a final, demanding stretch of the season without any further losses. The App State/UCLA transfer has been a breath of fresh air for the passing attack, but Saturday’s loss showed that it’s not infallible by any means. Tennessee failed to reach 34+ points for the first time this season, shooting itself in the foot time and again with game-changing mistakes.
The task won’t be easy against a Kentucky defense that’s been inconsistent at times but just had its best showing of the season last Saturday in a 16-13 overtime loss to Texas. The Wildcats also played Ole Miss tough in a one-score loss in Lexington in September.
Fortunately, the Vols will have their starting signal caller under center to get back into the win column against the Wildcats. Kickoff at Kroger Field is set for 7:45 p.m. ET, with the game being broadcast on the SEC Network.
