NFL makes decision on punishment on former Tennessee Vols EDGE James Pearce, Jr.
The league levied strong discipline on the VFL.
For former Tennessee Vols and current Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr., it always felt like a question of when rather than if the NFL would hand down a suspension stemming from his offseason arrest on multiple felony charges. On Friday, the league announced it will indeed punish the VFL, and the punishment is substantial.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the NFL is suspending Pearce for eight games.
That lines up with the baseline prediction that Falcons beat writer Josh Kendall of The Athletic had offered earlier in the week. ESPN’s Marc Raimondi added that the suspension is effective August 30 and goes until November 2, when he will be eligible to be reinstated. Raimondi also noted that Pearce did not appeal the eight-game suspension and that it is now final.
What led to the suspension
Pearce was arrested in February stemming from an incident involving him and his ex-girlfriend Rickea Jackson. Pearce is alleged to have rammed Jackson’s car with his car and then later made contact with a law enforcement officer with his vehicle while attempting to escape. He was subsequently pursued and arrested.
Pearce was able to enter a pre-trial intervention program in April, which upon successful completion would result in a dismissal of the charges. However, the league is still taking action regardless of the legal outcome.
Atlanta now without both young edge rushers for the first half of the season
The suspension creates a significant problem for the Falcons beyond just losing Pearce. Atlanta will now be without both of its key young edge rushers for the first half of the 2026 campaign. Jalon Walker tore his ACL during training camp and is out for the year.
That’s a brutal one-two punch for a defense that was counting on both players to anchor a promising pass rush after a breakout 2025 season. Pearce topped the elusive double-digit rookie sack benchmark, totaling 10.5 sacks on the season. Walker added 5.5.
The NFL’s decision is not surprising given the allegations against Pearce. The league has consistently shown a willingness to act independently of the courts in these situations.
Now the question shifts to what comes next for the former Vol. Pearce will need to stay on the right path once he returns to the field in the second half of the season and prove he can put this chapter behind him in the months and years to come.
