Peyton Manning made a promise to Arch Manning’s mom before Texas played Tennessee that Vols fans might find surprising

Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns visited Neyland Stadium for a game against the Tennessee Volunteers earlier this season, and uncle Peyton Manning was in the house for the matchup.

It’s been well documented that Vols legend Peyton Manning was cheering for his nephew, Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, when Texas played Tennessee in Neyland Stadium earlier this season.

Texas won the game 20-17 in what ended up being an ugly offensive game for both teams.

What fans may not know about that day, though, is that Peyton didn’t allow any Vols fans in his suite at Neyland Stadium.

According to The Athletic, Peyton invited the entire Manning family — including Arch’s parents, his mom Ellen and his dad Cooper, who is Peyton’s older brother — to sit in his suite for the game.

Ellen, however, was unsure at first because she didn’t want to be around a bunch of Tennessee fans who would be cheering anytime Arch got sacked.

So Peyton promised that no Vols fans would be allowed in the suite that day.

“When Texas traveled to Knoxville to play Tennessee at the end of September, Peyton Manning extended an invitation to the rest of the family: Come share his box at Neyland Stadium,” wrote The Athletic’s David Ubben. “Manning, the greatest quarterback in Volunteers history, shares the space with another Tennessee donor. And Ellen Manning, Arch Manning’s mother, voiced a concern.

“I said, ‘Look, I really don’t want to sit up there if it’s gonna be full of Tennessee fans. I just don’t think that’s a good idea. They cheer when he gets sacked,’” said Ellen. “We don’t want to have to endure all that.”

“Peyton promised: No Tennessee fans allowed,” added Ubben.

It was certainly an odd day for Peyton, who is extremely loyal to Tennessee (but family, of course, comes first). And while I’m sure Peyton loved getting the chance to see his nephew play on the same field where he played college football, I imagine that he’s happy it was just a one-time deal (unless Arch transfers after the season and joins a program that’s scheduled to play in Knoxville in 2027).
