ESPN confirms suspicion about Texas vs. Tennessee clash, and it just added some extra spice to the weekend
The Vols and Horns will have the eyes of the nation on them next Saturday.
The Tennessee Vols took care of business on Saturday night against Kennesaw State 42-9 to move to 3-0 on this young season. And now, Josh Heupel and his staff can put their full focus on the task at hand next weekend, and it’s a big one: the No. 1 Texas Longhorns.
The Horns come to Knoxville next Saturday for a noon showdown on ABC. As both teams will be in the top 15, it’ll be a game with a ton of interest nationally.
And that interest just got a spike after the Vols’ game. ESPN College Gameday will be coming to Knoxville for the game.
ESPN College Gameday coming to Knoxville for Tennessee vs. Texas
The Vols and Knoxville seemed to be a frontrunner after last weekend’s events. Oregon fell to Oklahoma State, tarnishing their matchup with USC. Oklahoma also lost to Michigan, taking some luster off their game with Georgia in Athens.
And now, Texas A&M fell victim to the upset bug, losing 31-21 to Kentucky at home on Saturday. Their matchup with LSU, who lost 32-24 at Ole Miss, will be betweeen one-loss teams. Gameday has already been to an LSU game twice in the first three weeks, so a fourth game seemed very unlikely.
Thus, the Vols’ matchup with Texas was clearly the logical choice, and ESPN agreed. It’ll be the premier college football show’s first appearance in Knoxville since last September, when they came to Knoxville for Tennessee’s showdown with Georgia.
And, according to Austin Stanley of A to Z Sports, it appears Tennessee was likely in the loop in it in advance, given the likely plans to host the final hour of the show inside Neyland Stadium due to the noon ET kickoff.
