Tennessee sophomore quarterback George MacIntyre, according to multiple reports, will make his first career start on Saturday on the road against Arkansas.

For MacIntyre, this is something that he’s been building toward for nearly his entire life. He dreamed of starting games in the SEC, and now his moment has arrived.

It’ll be a pretty cool moment for MacIntyre and his family when he takes the field as Tennessee’s starting quarterback on Saturday night in Fayetteville.

There’s something important that George MacIntyre needs to remember as he prepares for the start against Arkansas

Look, we all understand that the quarterback situation at Tennessee is a little muddy right now. True freshman Faizon Brandon started the first five games of the season after winning the job in fall camp. Brandon was then benched last week in the first half against Auburn after the offense struggled for a second straight game (Brandon is also dealing with a shoulder injury).

At this point, no one is quite sure how Tennessee’s quarterback situation will look the rest of the season.

It would be easy for MacIntyre to go into this game thinking it’s his only shot to take the job.

But he can’t think that way.

MacIntyre just needs to go out on Saturday and compete one play at a time. He doesn’t need to force anything or try to prove anything to anyone. MacIntyre just needs to take what the game is giving him each play. Maybe that means handing the ball off, maybe it means dumping it off to the checkdown, or maybe it means letting it rip downfield — it all depends on how the game unfolds.

Ultimately, George MacIntyre needs to be George MacIntyre on Saturday. There’s a reason Josh Heupel targeted him in the 2025 recruiting class. There’s a reason why MacIntyre was a highly-rated recruit — he’s a good player.

MacIntyre is still in the early stages of his football career — he’s got a lot of football ahead of him regardless of what happens against Arkansas. The Tennessee native doesn’t need to make this game any more than what it is — it’s just another day to compete. If MacIntyre has a great game, he’s not going to suddenly become the future No. 1 overall pick in the draft. And if he has a bad game, his football career isn’t going to suddenly be over. It’s not the only opportunity he’s going to receive.

On Saturday, GMac needs to go compete every rep without worrying about a result that hasn’t happened yet. It’s not going to be perfect — Arkansas is going to make some plays — but just keep competing and doing what needs to be done for Tennessee to win the game.

That should be MacIntyre’s ultimate goal on Saturday night. If he does that, I like Tennessee’s chances to have a great night in Fayetteville.
